When Ken Johnston first started writing songs in his early twenties, the music came easily as he had played guitar for a few years and JBhad recently started improvising on the piano. What did not come as easily at first were the lyrics. Luckily for him, he had a new friend at the time, Patti Bruckmann, who was an excellent writer and had agreed to let him put music to some of her poems. Two of these early songs, Life In Dreams, and The Outsider were recorded for kjband’s first album, All I Want.

One day, many years later, Ken got to thinking that there were other very good Johnston/Bruckmann songs that were worthy of recording. So that was when this album was conceived, which has become kjband’s 13th album, called J/B.

The songs – Life In Dreams and The Outsider – were re-recorded adding horn charts, and the best 8 other Johnston/Bruckmann songs were tapped to comprise this album.

The horn charts were written by Chris Rinaman from Shiny Nickel Music who has written charts for kjband and played trombone over the years. These charts are particularly melodic and creative.

The album features well-regarded New Jersey trumpet player Tony Perruso who has played with Southside Johnny and Bon Jovi.

This album marks the debut of an excellent new saxophone player for kjband, Frank Elmo. The rest of the top notch musicians from the last kjband record returned – Peter McCulloch on vocals, Chris Delis on guitar, Gary Georgett on keyboards, Ken Adessa on drums/percussion, Marco Vitali on violin, Ian Stewart on bass, and of course Ken Johnston on piano.

Recording of the album started in 2023 and was completed in the autumn of 2024. It was mastered by two-time Grammy nominated mastering artist Kim Rosen of Knack Mastering. It is available to stream on Spotify, Itunes, YouTube and other streaming services.

Johnston/Bruckmann

I’m due for some crazy times

Fairy tales and nursery rhymes

Life can’t hold me back too long

Time to sing a happy song

Friends are here to join the fun

Time to sit beneath the sun

Sounds of laughter in the air

Joys of spring will soon be here

Time brings changes

New life has begun

Turn the pages

Of the sad songs sung – the sad songs sung

Ready for a brand new day

Love is here to change my ways

On the road to better times

Fairy tales and nursery rhymes

Johnston/Bruckmann

Though I live my life in dreams

I strive for them with strength and schemes

It’s not as silly as it seems

I face my life with confidence

I believe I’m finding a peace of mind

I hope one day it will all make sense

And the world I once knew is left behind

Learning tricks of the trade

Dreams of freedom in the shade

Inabilities start to fade

I keep in mind the practicalities

As to whether or not my dreams come true

I believe true wisdom is hard to see

And the gift of insight is given to few

I haven’t any other choice

From within I hear a voice

Calling me with a strange force

Never can there be perfection

Due to life’s chain of body to spirit

Purpose in life is found through reflection

Open your heart and you will hear it

Johnston/Bruckmann

Knowing the debt of reaching for a star

Venturing paths of life I travel far

Still believing it’ll be my reality

Something inside me says I have great destiny

Without warning the advancing will pause

Not understanding but hoping there’s cause

I’d prefer to deal with common apprehension

Than feel like someone who’s in suspension

Suspended animation, when will the living begin?

Suspended animation, how do I fit in?

Making the motions as to just get by

While much energy within me lies

Sadness surrounds me with an eerie shading

I wish it would cease for my confidence is fading

Suspended animation, why does it take so long?

Suspended animation, where did I go wrong?

Johnston/Bruckmann

I dream of the day when you lay next to me

And I find shelter in the warmth of your arms

I forget days when I used to be free

For I’m filled with your love and your charms

Dream on, dream on for the day

Dream on, and love will come your way

Dream on, leave your cares behind

And one day your love will reach out to find you

Bring me fresh flowers of love for my table

And I’ll tell you all the things that I see

Come into my heart as soon as you’re able

A dreamer is waiting for what is to be

Dream on, dream on for the day

Dream on, and love will come your way

Dream on, leave your cares behind

And one day your love will reach out to find you

Johnston/Bruckmann

I live in Exalbion with trees of lazy blue

Near the town of Avalon, we sit and wait for you

A paradise as none before, with lazy purple haze

But we can wait no more, for this too is just a phase

I must return now, to those trees of lazy blue

And they to their Avalon, our lives we will pursue

A chance to see the other side again you’ve let pass by

From yourself you seem to hide and never wonder why

One day from Exalbion again I’ll seek your soul

And bring you to Avalon, where at last a life is whole

Seek for the open mind, seek for the open door

What it is that you will find is what I am here for

Johnston/Bruckmann

People standing around the wall

They hear the pied piper playin’

Inner secrets surround them all

Dreams unfilled keep them from strayin’

The other side provides their goal

Life’s ingredient to survive

Where hidden forces find a role

Waking them to become alive

Inner strength some keep denying

Others fail for lack of hope

Defeated others walk away crying

The saddest curse those who cope

But some just keep going on

With an unexplainable will

When all determination is gone

They’ll continue on even still

Johnston/Bruckmann

Forget those silly thoughts of ties

Bring on your convenient lies

In your game you know all the rules

Leave real love for those other fools

Love of convenience, right from the heart

Love of convenience, when bored you will part

You ignore my truth of love-lost fears

For your future waits until you appear

It hurts to see what you really are

As you reach for a pretend star

Love of convenience, ’til love do us part

Love of convenience, no need to start

Johnston/Bruckmann

Where is the love from yesterday?

I thought it was a strong one

Now all of our dreams will fade away

A perfect romance is done

Surprised when told the facts

I wished I had seen it coming

On my face tears made their tracks

My head was filled by a loud humming

Love has turned from joy to pain

You were my reason for living

Not much of me remains

My very soul I was giving

Johnston/Bruckmann

What is meant by truth?

Are you ever free?

Dreams that fade in light

Do you really see?

You are the hollow people

Living but not living

The caring empty ones

Giving but not giving

I am the outsider

I am the hero

The one person able to see

I am the outsider

I am all alone

The one person who is free

I am on the outside

Looking in on you

An honest observer

I see all the way through

I changed the way I see

A life I will not find

So it doesn’t matter

If you think I’ve lost my mind

 Johnston/Bruckmann

I sat down to write a song

Not too short and not too long

Then I started thinking of you

How you’ve changed my point of view

You picked me up and put me down

In a silly way I’ve found

You’ve made love a crazy thing

Sometimes I’m sad and sometimes I swing

I’m riding on a merry-go-round

Sometimes I’m up and now I’m down

I don’t want to stop let’s keep on going

Don’t want to stop let’s go
